What is WMV?
Video file based on the Microsoft Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container
format and compressed with Windows Media compression; similar to an .ASF
file and contains video encoded with one of Microsoft's Windows Media Video
(WMV) proprietary codecs. The licensing terms of DRM protected titles are
determined by the content providers and not Microsoft Corporation. WMV
9 also introduced a new profile titled Windows Media Video 9 Professional,
which is activated automatically whenever the video resolution exceeds
300,000 pixels (e.g., 528x576, 640*480 or 768x432 and beyond) and the bitrate
1000 kbit/s. It is targeted towards high-definition video content, at resolutions
such as 720p and 1080p. One of the uses for the codec is computer step-by-step
demonstration videos. The first version of the codec was WMV 7 Screen,
The second and current version, WMV 9 Screen, supports VBR encoding in
addition to CBR. Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 video game
consoles can also play WMV HD. Microsoft recommends that ASF files containing
non-Windows Media codecs use the generic .ASF file extension. Usage of
the term WMV often refers to the Microsoft Windows Media Video codec only.
This file is also found as a video/audio file on the Xbox. A number of
programs capture this file extension. In the past, computer users have
been known to have difficulties opening these files due to a flaw in Windows
Media Player or the WMV file. These issues have since been resolved with
the newer versions of Windows Media Player and other similar media players.
WMV files should now open and play with ease. Since no known domestic DVD
player supports this format, users of Photo Story 3 wishing to generate
material capable of being played in a DVD player will first have to convert
to MPEG-2 before burning a DVD (average file sizes in MPEG-2 are 5 to 6
times the .wmv file).
What is GIF?
One of the widely used formats for representing images on the Internet
is CompuServe's GIF, or graphics interchange format. An image file, like
any other computer file, is a collection of bits. There are a number of
different data block categories, and each of the various defined blocks
falls into one of these categories. In GIF terminology, a Graphics Control
Extension block is a type of Graphics Control block, for instance. In like
manner, Plain Text Extension blocks and the Local Image Descriptor are
types of Graphic Rendering blocks. The bitmap data is an Image Data block.
Comment Extension and Application Extension blocks are types of Special
Purpose blocks. The vast majority of GIF files contain 16-color or 256-color
near-photographic quality images. Gray-scale images, such as those produced
by scanners, are also commonly stored using GIF, although monochrome graphics,
such as clip art and document images, rarely are. Although the bulk of
GIF files are found in the Intel-based MS-DOS environment, GIF is not associated
with any particular software application. GIF also was not created for
any particular software application need, although most software applications
that read and write graphical image data, such as paint programs, scanner
and video software, and most image file display and conversion programs,
usually support GIF. GIF was instead intended to allow the easy interchange
and viewing of image data stored on local or remote computer systems. GIF
files do NOT store the image's scaled resolution ppi number, so scaling
is necessary every time one is printed. This is of no importance for screen
or web images. GIF file format was designed for CompuServe screens, and
screens don't use ppi for any purpose. Our printers didn't print images
in 1987, so it was useless information, and CompuServe simply didn't bother
to store the printing resolution in GIF files.
